Students in the Education & Training Program

Students in the Education & Training Program with a goatConroe ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) is investing in the future of education by cultivating tomorrow’s teachers in today’s classrooms. Through the district’s Education and Training CTE program, offered at all six comprehensive high schools and expanding to Timber Mill, students gain meaningful, hands-on experience that goes far beyond the traditional classroom. Currently, CISD has over 300 students enrolled in the Education and Training program districtwide, reflecting the growing interest in this dynamic pathway.

At the heart of the program is an innovative on-campus training lab, where high school students take on the role of educators for preschool-aged children (ages 3 and 4) whose parents work within the campus’ feeder zone. This unique model creates a win-win environment. Families benefit from a high-quality, discounted childcare option, while students gain invaluable, real-world teaching experience. With a near 1:1 high school student-to-preschool child ratio, preschoolers receive individualized attention, and high school students develop confidence, communication skills, and a deep understanding of early childhood education and lesson planning.

These preschool experiences sometimes extend beyond the Education and Training classroom. On many campuses, the preschoolers are integrated into other programs through collaborative, cross-curricular opportunities. Students may take part in field trips to foreign language classes, culinary programs, dance, AV studios, athletics, and more. This allows additional high school students across campus to step into a teaching role, reinforcing their own learning while developing communication, leadership, and mentorship skills, and providing inspiration to explore becoming an educator.

Students in the Education & Training ProgramStudents in the Education and Training program of study progress through a state-designed sequence of courses, including Principles of Education and Child Development or Human Growth and Development, before moving on to the double-block courses of Instructional Practices and the capstone course, Practicum in Education. Along the way, they learn how to design engaging lesson plans, implement behavior management strategies, and create hands-on learning activities tailored to young learners. Creativity thrives as students develop interactive lessons, design incentive systems, and adapt instruction to meet individual needs. They also explore non-teaching roles within education, including counseling, administration, support staff, and operations.

By the time students reach Practicum in Education, their experience extends beyond the campus lab. They participate in internships with educators across their feeder zones, most often at elementary schools, but also at intermediate campuses and high school special education programs. These placements provide a broader perspective on teaching and allow students to explore different educational settings and age groups.

Students in the Education & Training ProgramA major milestone for students in the program is the opportunity to earn their Educational Aide I Certification through the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Last year, 74 students achieved this state-recognized, industry-based certification, equipping them with credentials that allow them to pursue employment in Texas schools even before completing college. This distinction not only validates their skills but also strengthens their college and scholarship applications, showcasing real-world experience and career readiness.

In addition to classroom and internship experiences, students can join the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE), affiliated nationally with Educators Rising. Through TAFE, students compete in events at the Area and State levels, demonstrating their knowledge and skills in education-related competitions. This year, Conroe ISD is proud to have 11 students advancing to the national competition in Portland this June, a testament to the strength and dedication of the program.

Ultimately, the Education and Training program in Conroe ISD is about more than coursework. It is about inspiring the next generation of educators. By providing authentic teaching experiences, professional certifications, and leadership opportunities, these programs are building a strong pipeline of future teachers who are passionate, prepared, and committed to making a difference.

Through innovation, creativity, and real-world application, Conroe ISD is not just teaching students about education. It is empowering them to lead it.
