Social Media Accessibility Standards
Purpose
Conroe Independent School District (Conroe ISD) uses social media to communicate with students, families, staff, and the community. The district is committed to ensuring that content shared through official social media channels is accessible to individuals with disabilities.
Scope
This policy applies to all official district and campus social media accounts.
Platforms may include:
Meta Platforms (Facebook and Instagram)
YouTube
X Corp
Other district-approved platforms
Because these platforms are operated by third parties, some accessibility features depend on platform capabilities.
Accessibility Standards
Images
Include alternative text (alt text) when the platform allows
Ensure alt text describes meaningful content, not just appearance
Example:
“Students assembling a robotics project during a classroom activity.”
Videos
Provide captions for all videos when possible
Acceptable captioning methods:
Platform caption tools
Edited captions in video files
Reviewed automatic captions
When feasible, include spoken descriptions of important visuals
Graphics and Flyers
Do not rely on images alone to convey information
Include key details in the post text:
event name
date/time
location
important instructions
Hashtags and Emojis
Use CamelCase hashtags for readability
Example: #ConroeISDStudents
Limit emoji use
Avoid placing emojis mid-sentence
Links
Use descriptive language when linking
Avoid “Click here”, "Learn more", "Download"
Example:
“View the full event details on the district website”
Live Video
Use captions when available
Provide captioned recordings when feasible
Training and Expectations
Staff responsible for posting on social media are expected to follow these accessibility practices as part of standard communication procedures.
Limitations
Accessibility of social media platforms is partially dependent on third-party providers. Conroe ISD will continue to follow best practices within available platform capabilities.
