Campus Updates: May 7 – May 13

Birnham Woods Elementary
Staff and students are busy preparing for STAAR Math and Reading on May 8 & 9. The campus will be closed to visitors.

Monday, May 8 and Wednesday, May 10 second grade will go on a field trip to learn more about the physics of movement by roller skating.

Tuesday, May 9 first grade will be going on their field trip.

Second and fourth grade GT students will hold their TPSP Expo to showcase their work on Monday, May 15.

First and third grade GT students will showcase their TPSP Expo projects on Tuesday, May 16.

Birnham Woods will once again host author, HJ Ralles. She will be teaching third graders how to improve their writing skills.

On Thursday, May 18, fourth graders will visit their new campus, Cox Intermediate.

Second graders will have an open house and choral performance on Thursday, May 18 at 6 p.m.

Fourth graders will participate in the Future War Eagle Challenge at ORHS on Friday, May 19.

Broadway Elementary
Friday, May 12 is our annual Career Day. We have parents and community coming to share with our students about their career and what they did to train for their career. We have over 50 people coming to present to our students.

May 15 and 16 will be our Field Day sponsored by our P.E. department.

On May 19, our fourth grade students will be participating in the Oak Ridge High School War Eagle Challenge.

Buckalew Elementary
Each week students have the opportunity to be nominated as a “Student of the Week” when they demonstrate any of the 7 Keys to Success we teach at our school. Students nominated receive a special certificate to take home. They are then entered into a weekly drawing. The winners are on the announcements and are presented a “Principal’s Medallion”. One student per grade level is drawn weekly. Congratulations to the following students: Ella Bendicho, Micah Posey, Mark Bennick, Michael Basconi, and Ashton Johnston.

Bush Elementary
Due to STARR testing, Bush Elementary Campus will be closed to visitors Monday, May 8 to Friday, May 12.

Congratulations to our PAWS for Pride Character Award winners for the month of April. The character trait we celebrated in April was “Cooperation.” The winners are Olivia Tupper, Caden Kennedy, Haven Gaines, Matthew Huereca, Grant Munson, Marek Bruno, Jonathan Kolp, Sasha Apukhtina, Charlotte Bond, Corey Castillo, Campbell Chruszczak, Elijah Anderton, Tyson Bruno, Cate Kier, Jonas Benson, Devon Shumate, Olivia Nelson, Kalleigh Joslin, Reese Kim, Cooper Paull, Karly Day, Claira Royster, Fernanda Segura, Arianna Regollar, Bailey Mitchen, Jay Murray, Leo Block, Savannah Holloway, Gracie Druskoff, Audrey Stinson, Willliam Bond, Halle Frey and Makenna Roberts.

Creighton Elementary
Monday, May 8, third and fourth grade students will take the STAAR Math Test.

Tuesday, May 9, third and fourth grade students will take the STAAR Reading Test.

David Elementary
David Elementary would like to invite all incoming kindergarten students and parents to a Kindergarten Information Night on Thursday, May 4 at 6 p.m. in the gym. This meeting will provide families with information needed to prepare your child for Kindergarten, as well as give families an opportunity to ask questions and take a tour of the school. We hope you can join us!

Giesinger Elementary
May 11 will be McDonald’s Spirit Night from 5-8 p.m. Teachers from kindergarten, second, and fourth grades will be at McDonald’s to greet and assist families. Our school will receive a portion of the evening’s proceeds.

Author Aaron Reynolds will be on our campus Monday, May 15. He has written many books that are currently in our library that students enjoy reading. All grade levels will hear Mr. Reynolds’ presentation, and we are very excited for his visit.

Hailey Elementary
Attendance counts for every child every day. Congratulations to Ms. Palomo’s, Mrs. Pepperman’s, Mrs. Hayes’, Mrs. Ellis’, Mrs. Haas’, and Mrs. Butler’s classes for achieving 10 Attendance Rockets for the whole class being on time and staying at school all day!

Monday and Tuesday, May 8 and 9, Hailey third and fourth graders will complete the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) for math and reading. All third and fourth grade students must make every effort to be in attendance and not to schedule appointments during these two school days. Hailey will not permit visitors on campus for grades PK-4 on these days. We ask that you not plan on having lunch with your child at any grade level or schedule a conference on either day. This is to allow for the optimal testing environment for our students to be successful. Please know that if you need to come into the Main Office area, we welcome you. Thank you for your support during this testing period. We continue our goal to have perfect attendance every day as well as on our testing days.

Calling All Volunteers! Celebration Day is May 19. Celebration Day is held each May to celebrate our academic success. The students celebrate their academic achievements with indoor and outdoor activities. We need volunteers to spend a couple of hours to make it all work. Please look for more information coming home in Wednesday folders.

Students can bring aluminum cans, foil, pans, and aluminum computer parts for recycling every Friday morning for our Cash for Cans program, which helps support our school. Please deliver recyclables to the front porch when arriving at school.

Houser Elementary
Monday and Tuesday, May 8 and 9, are STAAR Math and STAAR Reading tests for our third and fourth graders. The campus will be closed to visitors on these two days.

On Wednesday, May 10, our third graders will be participating in a YMCA Field Trip, and our fourth graders will participate on Thursday, May 11.

Friday, May 12 is Field Day! Come excited for a day of fun!

Kaufman Elementary
Campus will be closed the week of May 8 due to STAAR testing.

Monday, May 8, third and fourth graders will take the Math STAAR test.

Tuesday, May 9, third and fourth graders will take the Reading STAAR test.

Thursday, May 11 will be our SK8 Town Spirit Night from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Mitchell Intermediate
Applications for the end of year Mitchell Mustang Talent Show are due on Monday, May 8.

On Monday, May 8, sixth graders will be take the Math STAAR test.

On Tuesday, May 9, sixth graders will take the Reading STAAR test.

On Wednesday, May 10, fifth graders with take the Science STAAR test.

On Thursday, May 11, the Mitchell choirs will perform in the Auditorium at McCullough Jr. High at 7:30 p.m. Each choir will perform selections they have worked on during the spring semester.

The Mitchell choirs will be performing in the Spring High School Choral Festival on Friday, May 12. After the performance, they will celebrate their year-end accomplishments at Incredible Pizza!

Oak Ridge High School
Congratulations to our boys’ 4 X 100 relay team who took the GOLD at District on Thursday, April 13 and broke the standing school record. Team members are: Zavier Johnson, Nathaniel McRae, Grant Stuard, and Zach Johnson.

On Monday, April 10, Oak Ridge High School students in Advanced Animation traveled to NASA to submit their projects for final design review. Each student met one-on-one with Astronaut Nicole Mann to explain their design.
Students who presented designs were: Rashaun Horsford Jr., Ethan Gibbs, Elizabeth Oursa, Isaac Thomas, Christopher Stevens, and Dakota Anderson.

Rice Elementary
Friday, May 12 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. the PTO will sponsor a school dance.

Our fourth grade GT students will hold an expo on Thursday, May 18 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

The Future Tiger Challenge will be held on Friday, May 19 for all fourth graders.

Our fourth grade students will have their field day on Wednesday, May 24.

Friday, May 26 our pre-kindergarten through third grade students will have their field day.
