School Calendar Process

• The District Level Planning and Decision-Making Committee (DLPDMC) of Conroe ISD is responsible for developing a school calendar to present as a recommendation to the Board of Trustees.
• The calendars are posted on the CISD website and available for review and comment typically from late November to early January.
• It is anticipated that the DLPDMC will present its recommendation to the Board of Trustees in January 2023.

In December of 2016, the District applied for and received designation as a District of Innovation, which allows us to begin school prior to the fourth Monday in August. The earlier start date has allowed us to:

• end the first semester and give semester exams prior to winter break (90% of those surveyed prefer ending semester prior to winter break) and have better balance of the number of instructional days between the first and second semester, which is very important in secondary schools
• begin the school year mid-week as opposed to a Monday (57% of those surveyed prefer this)
• end the school year in the last week of May, as opposed to the first week of June (80% prefer ending in May)
• add a holiday for students and staff in October, giving families a three-day weekend between Labor Day and the Thanksgiving (56% would like to keep October holiday)
• have a full week off at Thanksgiving (85% want to keep the full week off at Thanksgiving)

The practice of taking Thanksgiving week off began in 2010. Since its implementation, it has been very popular with students and families (85%). As a result, it remains a current feature in the calendar.

Many CISD families split possession of their children during the winter break. Having three weekends included in the break allows for a more equitable split of time between parents. It also allows families who travel over the holidays more flexibility.

The District has a waiver from the State and is able to count up to 2100 minutes (equivalent of 5 days) for professional development for staff during the school year.
