Mittie Campbell

Conroe Independent School District held the dedication ceremony for Mittie J. Campbell Elementary, one of two new K–6 campuses that opened in August 2025. The event celebrated both the district’s continued growth and the legacy of Mittie J. Campbell, the first Black woman to serve as a principal in Conroe ISD.

CampbellPrincipal Christa Haymark served as emcee for the evening, welcoming guests and leading the program with grace and enthusiasm. The celebration featured an orchestra performance by students from Oak Ridge High School, student pledges, a Presentation of Colors by the Oak Ridge Air Force JROTC, and musical selections by the Campbell Honor Choir.

Board President Misty Odenweller described the new campus as “a symbol of growth, of progress, and of the enduring legacy of a remarkable woman who helped shape the very foundation of education in our community.” Superintendent Dr. David Vinson also shared remarks celebrating Campbell’s influence on public education and the promise the new school represents, recognizing the design team from Arcadis and building contractor Marshall Construction.

CampbellOne of the evening’s most memorable moments came from Nina Norman, principal of Washington High School, who delivered a powerful speech honoring Mittie J. Campbell’s courage and trailblazing leadership. Norman reflected on Campbell’s groundbreaking career, noting that “her legacy still breathes in this moment, in every child who will walk through these doors.”

Guests also witnessed the unveiling of the official portrait of Mrs. Campbell, painted by Iris Shen, a student artist from The Woodlands College Park High School. The portrait will be displayed prominently at the school’s main entrance.

Earlier in the evening, the Montgomery County Historical Commission dedicated the official Texas Historical Marker near the campus flagpole, commemorating Mittie J. Campbell’s pioneering role in education and the profound impact she left on the Conroe community.
