CONROE, TEXAS – Asher Vargas, a junior at Grand Oaks High School, won the Boys 2025 UIL Class 6A State Golf Individual Championship at White Wing Golf Course. Vargas’s win marked Grand Oaks' first ever state title in golf.
The state championship presented more setbacks than planned but Vargas took each one in stride, not letting it effect his mental focus. The tournament was designed to be played in two rounds across two days – Monday, May 5th and Tuesday, May 6th – however, inclement weather proved to be a complication. Both rounds were originally pushed to Monday, but the rain came earlier than anticipated leaving time for Vargas to complete only one round.
For some players the cold, windy, and wet environment poorly impacted their game. However, for Vargas, a Belgium raised golf player, the weather was no different than how he learned to play as a young child. Unphased by the change in forecast Vargas went on to finish the course with a score of 69, including three birdies, finishing 3 under par.
Now, Vargas has his sights set on his senior season and the possibility to leave behind a legacy at Grand Oaks of being a back-to-back state champion. The 2026 golf season will be a competitive and exhilarating experience for spectators as the 2024 State Champion Cooper Paull, from The Woodlands High School, will face off against Vargas to see who can take home their second state championship.
Regardless of the outcome, Vargas’s time on the fairway is nowhere near over as he will be heading off to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after graduating where he plans to further his academic and athletic career as a Tar Heel.
Vargas’s championship win is not only an outstanding accomplishment for himself but serves as a culminating victory to the outstanding year of athletic performance achieved across Conroe ISD. Notable state championships from the 2024-2025 school year include:
