Longhorn

ORHS LonghornThe Oak Ridge Longhorn program is more than a competitive showing team. It is a hands-on, real-world learning experience that gives students opportunities most never see inside a traditional classroom. Through the structure and support of Conroe ISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, students at Oak Ridge High School are able to step into the agriculture science industry, take on real responsibility, and grow in ways that stay with them long after the show season ends.

Year after year, the program has built a strong reputation in the Longhorn show circuit. Oak Ridge exhibitors consistently bring high-quality cattle to the ring and have earned impressive results, including multiple Grand Reserve Heifer titles throughout the season. This year, the program added another milestone by earning Reserve Steer at the Cattlemen’s Congress, one of the most competitive national events in the country. Competing against exhibitors from across multiple states requires preparation, discipline, and confidence, and Oak Ridge students continue to prove they belong on that stage.

What sets this program apart is not just the banners hanging on the wall, but the work that happens long before a student ever steps into the ring. ORHS LonghornStudents are responsible for daily care, feeding, grooming, and training. They learn how to manage their time, problem solve on the fly, and stay committed through early mornings, late nights, and long weekends on the road. These lessons are not theoretical. They are lived experiences that build character, resilience, and pride.

The opportunities extend well beyond competition. Through involvement in Longhorn associations, Oak Ridge seniors routinely earn substantial scholarships based on their participation, leadership, and work ethic. Many graduating students leave the program with more than $20,000 in scholarship support, helping them take meaningful steps toward college and future careers. Another valuable aspect of the program is the strong sense of community and extensive network that the Longhorn program provides.

Programs like this do not happen by accident. They are the result of public education investing in CTE pathways that give students access to real skills, real industries, and real outcomes. The Oak Ridge Longhorn program continues to develop champions in the show ring and confident, capable young adults prepared for whatever comes next.

Student Perspective

My name is Samantha Ferguson, and I am a junior aORHS Longhornt Oak Ridge High School and a member of the Longhorn show team. Being part of this program has shaped me in ways I never expected. I have learned patience, responsibility, problem solving, and confidence through experiences that cannot be replicated in a classroom alone.

I am thankful for the opportunity to travel across Texas showing my heifer and meeting so many people within the Longhorn community. Every show strengthens the bond I share with my teammates and connects me with exhibitors, breeders, and families who genuinely support one another. Even after a tough run in the ring, there is always someone willing to offer encouragement or help you learn from the experience.

This program has helped me grow not only as a showman, but as a person. Each time I walk into the ring, I feel more confident in myself and proud of the work I have put in. I will always value the lessons and relationships this program has given me, and I hope I can inspire other students to take advantage of opportunities like this at Oak Ridge High School.
