Twelve Conroe ISD Destination Imagination Teams Advance to Global Finals
Conroe ISD had another successful year at the Texas Destination Imagination Affiliate State Tournament in Anna, Texas earlier this month. Twenty-three teams represented Conroe ISD at the state tournament, and 12 of those teams qualified to continue to the Global Tournament in Knoxville, TN on May 25-28.
Destination Imagination is a leader in project-based learning opportunities that blend STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship. Its academic challenges teach kids in grades kindergarten through 12 how to solve open-ended problems and present their solutions at competitive tournaments. DI’s mission is to develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st century skills and creativity.
Teams work from September until early spring to solve their challenges prior to taking their solution to a regional tournament to be appraised. Regional tournament winners advance to the state tournament, and state tournament winners continue to the Global Tournament in May.
Conroe ISD schools with teams advancing to Globals are as follows:
• Academy of Science and Technology – 5 teams
• Knox Junior High – 2 teams
• Bozman Intermediate – 1 team
• Collins Intermediate – 1 team
• David Elementary – 1 team
• Tough Elementary – 2 teams
Destination Imagination has had a positive impact on more than 1.5 million students who have taken part in its acclaimed Challenge program. This year, 150,000 students have participated in tournaments throughout the U.S. and 30 countries in hopes of earning a spot at the Global Finals competition in May. In Texas, over 20,000 students participate in DI annually, making the State the largest participant in the organization.
“The Destination Imagination program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity,” said Chuck Cadle, CEO of Destination Imagination. “Quantitative reasoning, collaborative problem solving, risk taking, collaboration, presentations and thinking on your feet are some of the important skills learned in the program.”
Destination Imagination, Inc. dedicates itself to enriching the global community by providing opportunities for learners of all ages to explore and discover using the creative process from imagination to innovation.
