The Academy began in the fall of 1998 and currently enrolls 385 students, respectively, in grades 9-12. Academy students graduate from Conroe High School, while taking math, science, health science, computer science, and advanced placement courses within the Academy. The Academy requires a high level of commitment on the part of students and parents. The program combines rigorous career exploration, requiring time outside the school day, significant research work, and an internship in addition to math and science each year of their high school career. The purpose of the Academy is to offer an expanded and accelerated program to students who are highly motivated toward a career in science, math, health science, engineering, law, or business, as well as creating a collegebound experience, a rich foundation for individual future learning.
Based on this purpose, the primary goals of the Academy are:
•To provide students specialized courses in mathematics, science, allied health science, engineering, and technology.
•To transmit to students an understanding of the nature of science and the scientific enterprise and to serve as a portal of entry to advanced science study.
•To maximize student achievement by providing a stimulating learning environment characterized by application, career exploration, academic rigor, support, and varied learning and assessment opportunities.
•To support student through internships, competitive group and individual design and research efforts, and student-driven demonstrations and outreach initiatives.
•To help students explore a wide range of opportunities available in STEM careers through interactions with individuals at institutions of higher learning, hospitals, business, and industry.
•To develop competitive, confident, capable learners.
•To develop a community of learners based on a continuous improvement model involving teachers, students, parents, and community members.
•To serve as a resource to the other CISD schools.
Conroe ISD students in the Peet, Washington, and Moorhead junior high school attendance zones apply to the Academy in September of the eighth grade. The faculty selection panel applies criteria for invitation that includes screening of essays, grades, teacher recommendations, State assessment, parental support, standardized testing, and interviews with parents and students. All incoming Academy students must complete algebra I prior to starting the 9th grade. Students in the 9th grade and beyond who are new to Conroe ISD are considered for invitation based on the same criteria plus compatability of their course work with Academy requirements. If accepted, these students must meet all Academy graduation requirements within the constraints of their time prior to graduation. Asummer math acceleration program of algebra I, pre-calculus, and Spanish II are available to all students accepted into the Academy. Academy students may earn well over the State-recommend 24-credits during their four years in high school. Included in the program are two years of biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, calculus, medical microbiology, anatomy, and physiology, two years of health science technologies, math through calculus, explorations, research and problems, and internship. Many courses are Advanced Placement and Dual-Credit. An advisory committee comprised of representatives from business partnerships, institutions of higher learning, local medical and engineering facilities, local private physicians, Conroe ISD administrators, and Academy students, parents, and teachers are in place to provide on-going guidance and vision. The Academy is a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology.
