TECHNOLOGY PLAN:

School Level Equalization Plan for Technology (SLEPT)

Goal: To provide technology equipment to schools in a manner that provides all CISD students and teachers an equal opportunity to access and integrate technology into the learning process.

Computer analysis: To address issues of equity, the District utilizes a weighted formula based upon the vintage of the computer. The vintage of the computer is related to the year of production and does not necessarily equate to functionality. One of the technology implementation plan’s goals is to place computers where they can be utilized appropriately and effectively. In an effort to protect the District's technology investments, strageties were developed to effectively utilize legacy equipment. For instance, Up until 1999, Apple II series computers were still effectively utilized in Mastery Development labs, while 386 computers were being utilized in Citrix labs where they ran Microsoft Office97 and Internet Explorer 4.0. Currently, through term server technology, CISD has significantly reduced the total cost of ownership (TCO) by implementing over 5,000 thin client computers providing the standard software suite on trouble-free equipment.

The computer vintage is calculated as follows:

Vintage I:       Apple II+, Apple IIe, Apple IIc, Apple IIgs
Vintage II:      PC 286 and Macintosh LC II
Vintage III:    PC 386 (Windows 3.11) and Macintosh LC III, LC400s
Vintage IV:     PC 486 (Windows95) and Macintosh LC500s, 6000 series, PowerMacs
Vintage V:      PC Pentium, Pentium II (Windows98) and Macintosh 5200s, 5300s, 5400, 5500s, G3s, PowerPCs
Vintage VI:     PC Pentium III, IV (Windows 2000)
Vintage VII:   PC Pentium V, (WindowsXP)

One of the Technology Implementation Plan’s goal is to maintain an average of one vintage level behind the current vintage. That would allow approximately 33% of the computers to be Vintage V, 33% Vintage VI, and 33% Vintage VII.  As of the 2006 school year, 98% of the computers in use are Vintage VI or newer.

Implementation: Elementary Schools

 2006 - 2007 School year:

·        Now that all computers are Vintage VI or newer, begin the 5-year replacement schedule.

·        Expand wireless computer access by installing a portable wireless computer lab at each campus.

Estimated Cost: $1,750,000 yearly (State Technology & Bond funds)

Implementation: Secondary Schools

2006 - 2007 School year:
