Computers are utilized in a variety of strategies throughout the district. To support instruction, it is our goal to have at least one computer in every classroom connected to the District network. The remaining computers are implemented based upon campus needs. The elementary schools tend to distribute the computers throughout the building based upon the collaborative model developed from the Creighton and Collins pilot project and the technology model developed for new schools. The secondary schools tend to have a larger proportion of computers in labs to address keyboarding and the computer credit requirements.
The goals for the implementation of instructional technology support include:
· Lower the average elementary school student-to-computer ratio from:
|
1991 |
1999 |
2006 |
|
|
|
2.7 to 1 |
The secondary student-to-computer ratio has bee lowered from about 11:1 in 1991 to an average of 2.7:1 in 2006. The number of computers in the District has increased from approximately 1,400 in 1991 to over 18,000 in 2006, while the membership has increased from under 24,000 in 1991 to over 42,300 students in 2006.
I. Provide comprehensive staff development. Staff development is offered through the Technology Department throughout the summer and the school year. Two instructional specialists provide this training. Individual campuses also provide technology staff development throughout the year in accordance with their individual campus technology plans. The Technology Department provided over 100 courses from June, 2005, through February, 2006, with over 1400 teachers and administrators participating in these staff development offerings.
II. Provide the infrastructure to deliver instruction. This money has been effectively utilized to install a state-of-the-art building infrastructure and wide area network to facilitate instruction. This infrastructure has the capability to support interactive voice, data, and video throughout the district. There are currently over 18,500 computers connected to the District network.
