The Conroe Independent School District (CISD) celebrated the beginning of the 2016-17 school year on Thursday, August 18, at the annual “Celebrate Our Schools” assemblies. The morning session began with the Secondary Teacher of the Year, Zachary Taylor, and the Elementary Teacher of the Year, Araelia Betler, leading the pledges followed by Conroe ISD music and choir teachers singing the “National Anthem.” A musical performance comprised of over 100 students representing all Conroe ISD feeder zones entertained the crowd.

As in previous years, Dr. Stockton presented facts, assessment results, and exciting news from across CISD in his State of the District address with the overarching theme of making this the ‘Year of Kindness.’ Dr. Stockton also shared an interview with Dayren Carlisle, Coordinator of Bilingual/ESL, in which she discussed the impact teachers had on her life. CISD student Solomon Hutchins told his story of being recently adopted from Ethiopia and his eagerness to attend school. The assembly concluded with the reading of a book by Dr. Stockton and Solomon about the impact teachers can have on students’ lives.

In addition to celebrating the new school year, everyone who attended the assembly had the opportunity to donate to the Montgomery County Food Bank. Every dollar raised allows the Food Bank to purchase eleven pounds of food. This year, CISD collected over $8,400 at the assemblies.
