The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees gave special recognition to Shireen Bell, a senior from The Woodlands High School, for being awarded the 2012 YMCA of Greater Houston Teen Volunteer of the Year, during the September Board meeting.
Shireen Bell is a senior at The Woodlands High School and a volunteer at the South Montgomery County YMCA. She was honored as the 2012 YMCA of Greater Houston Teen Volunteer of the Year by receiving the Jessica Loverich Award, named after a former YMCA junior leader who lost her life in a car accident. The award is presented to one youth who has a significant impact on the community through volunteer work, positive leadership, strong character, an ethic of service, a commitment to equality and social justice, and exemplifies the five core values of the YMCA: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring and Faith. Only one teenager from all 41 YMCAs in the Houston and surrounding area receives this award. Shireen is the third CISD student to receive the award in its five years of existence.
Mr. Mark Cochran, Community Executive Director of the South Montgomery County YMCA, introduced Shireen to the Board and presented her with the award. Dr. Ann Snyder also presented Shireen with a certificate after commenting on the many hours she has dedicated to helping others. Upon receiving the award and certificate, Shireen thanked the Board, Dr. Stockton, and Mr. Cochran for the honor to receive recognition.
