Joe Michels has been appointed to the Conroe ISD Board of Trustees to fill the unexpired term of Position 7 which became vacant when Mr. Gerald Irons resigned in June. Mr. Irons served on the Board for more than twenty-one years.
The Board decided to fill the vacancy instead of calling a special election and nineteen community members submitted applications for the position. Michels was unanimously approved to fill the position until the next Board member election is held in November 2012. Michels will be sworn in August 2, 2011.
Michels has been an active member of the Conroe ISD community serving on three Facility Planning Committees, the Oak Ridge High School Band Booster Club, and the radio broadcast team for Highlander Athletics. He ran for Board position 2 in 2008 and has two daughters who attended Conroe ISD schools and graduated from Oak Ridge High School. He has practiced law for twenty years and is the current Mayor of Oak Ridge North.
"Education is the single biggest determinant of success," he wrote in the application for the trustee position. "It is incumbent upon us to provide exemplary educational opportunities, support for dedicated teachers, and the resources to keep pace with an ever-changing society."
