Conroe Independent School
District
A Brief
History
In
1886 the Conroe Public School’s first classes were opened in a one-room
school constructed of rough lumber near the present community of Beach. It
was called Conroe Mill School and was open each year for a five-month
term. The first African American school was located in Central Baptist
Church at Medeley Quarters. The Conroe Independent School District was
created by the Commissioners Court of Montgomery County, Texas, July 12,
1892, by consolidating the twelve Common School Districts surrounding
Conroe. This area covered 25 square miles. The 39th Legislature
of the State of Texas in 1925 mandated the enlargement of the District by
keeping intact the already defined 25 square miles and adding numerous
other surrounding school areas bringing the district to 333 square miles.
On June 22, 1992, the annexation of 7,781 acres of Magnolia Independent
School District increased Conroe ISD to the current size of 348.09 square
miles.
Prior
to the 1925 consolidation, few rural children were able to attend high
school. The first graduating class of Conroe High School, one male and
three females, received their diplomas in 1902. The number of CISD graduates for
the 2006-2007 school year was over 3,000 students from six high schools.
With
the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, Conroe ISD will occupy 50
campuses over the 348 square miles that the District encompasses. The
oldest campus is Travis Intermediate School and the newest campus is Broadway Elementary
and a replacement school for Houston Elementary.
These additions bring the count of campuses in CISD to 27 elementary
schools, 7 intermediate schools, 6 junior high schools, 6 high schools,
and two academies.
Conroe Independent
School District has made major strides since 1886 with its rural beginning
to one of the fastest growing school districts in the nation. Currently
CISD has over 46,500 students and 5,500+ full time employees and is
projected to be home to more than 53,000 students by the year 2012.
Meeting the needs of the District’s continued growth is a top priority for
CISD as evidenced by the passage of a $279,931,838 bond referendum in
September 2004.
